Born in London and emigrated to New Zealand 1972. Duncan studied for a diploma in graphic design at ATI. With a career in art and design, running a successful studio in Auckland for many years, working in the graphic design industry while keeping a strong connection in fine arts. Predominately a painter, Duncan’s style and ability captures various fine art techniques, always evolving into fresh ideas.

Early paintings are surreal precise landscapes and studies, rock pools and elements of nature or the compelling decay of weathered surfaces, which can sometimes be beautiful in its simplicity. This was followed by a more abstract approach with larger format work based on landscapes inspired by various road trips and expressed in aerial and multi view points, experimenting and combining typography and graphic elements to create dynamic interior pieces.

Working mainly with oil on canvas, more recent work takes on a graphic and almost architectural muse, exploring buildings surfaces and components in a cropped composition of grouped prototype like structures. Lines are etched in the canvas expressing and revealing layers of paint as if drafting a plan.

Based in Auckland, Duncan’s work is represented in private and corporate collections in New Zealand and overseas.
